NASA Western States Championships Presented By Toyo Tires Getting Ready For Green

Competitors are in heavy preparation for the second annual NASA Western States Championships presented by Toyo Tires to run at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca July 31- August 2.

The 2.2-mile, 11-turn undulating road course located in the foothills of the Monterey Bay area has NASA racers from the across the western region preparing their cars for three days of competition that will crown champions across 36 classes.

Arizona's Dave Schotz is coming to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in his yellow Pontiac Firebird as well as his silver Corvette looking for his eighth, ninth and tenth championship.

"I am a seven time NASA National Championship winner,"Schotz said. "In 2008 I won PTB, 2009 CMC2, 2013, PTB, TTB and TTC, 2014 won PTB on the east coast and TTC on the west coast. This year in PTB I see Bob Schader and Robert Seibel as tough competitors. In PTC it is Jeremy Croiset, Hal Dunn, Robert Rose and Dennis Holloway. I want to be the first person to win four National Championships in one event! I'll be running my Corvette in TTC/PTC and the yellow Firebird in TTB and PTB. I am still TBD on running the Eastern States at Virginia International Raceway, so we will see."

For Texas racer Toby Grahovec, he is bringing the No. 25 GTS3 BMW Z4 with support from Classic BMW. Grahovec is a looking forward to running at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and proving the performance of the rescued Z4.

"I think Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the perfect combination of high speed and low speed corners, situated on the side of a mountain, which makes for very exciting racing," Grahovec said. "It also has the world-famous Corkscrew, which challenges even the most skilled racers. I will be racing my BMW Z4. A cool fact about this BMW Z4 racecar was that our dealership (Classic BMW) sold this car from our showroom in 2003. Ten years later we rescued it from a junkyard and built it into the awesome racecar that it is today. We named this Z4 "The Bull," and placed a logo of the head of a bull on the hood of our car as a tribute to Tom Bull, our long-time team manager, who passed away last year after a lengthy battle with cancer. We want to show fans and competitors that we build fast and highly competitive racecars at Classic BMW Motorsports because we have some of the most highly skilled technicians in the industry."

Will Faules, NASA National Event manager, and his team from the California regions are ready to entertain as well as witness some great racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

"We have a great race weekend management team with support coming from all of our California regions," Faules said. "We have some great off the track event plans that include parties and other events to further build the camaraderie amongst all of the NASA membership especially the competitors and officials. The team at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will have the circuit and paddock areas in typically great shape to help make sure everything runs smoothly."

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a 2.2-mile, 11-turn undulating road course located in the foothills of the Monterey Bay area. The track is known for its high speeds and signature downhill Corkscrew turn. The challenging road course is sure to provide exciting racing throughout the championships weekend.
