2016 Watkins Glen: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

Did you know the NASCAR Sprint Cup series has been racing at the beautiful Watkins Glen road circuit since 1957 ? The first race was won by Buck Baker in a '57 Chevrolet. The Cup series returned for a short two-race stint in 1964 & 1965, and then in 1986 it began its current run on the schedule. In all 33 races have been run over the years.

So who is going to have a good shot at a win today ?

Usually we'd point out that 3-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart won the 2009 race to eclipse Jeff Gordon for the most wins at 'The Glen' with five. Stewart won the 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 & 2009 races, and when he wasn't winning he finished second - 2006 & 2008.

But Stewart hasn't had a top-five finish at Watkins Glen since that victory in 2009 and has just one win since he broke his leg.

So bring on the defending winner Joey Logano who will start the 2015 event and won the NASCAR Xfinity race yesterday. But his record at Watkins Glen has been spotty as he has just won other top-five at Watkins Glen.

Another note, only five current drivers have won previously at The Glen - Stewart, Logano, Allmendinger, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch.

So, today's winning pick is... Kyle Busch, simply because he is on a roll.

But if Busch doesn't win, keep an eye on Logano.

Enjoy today's road course race. The twisty bits only happens twice a year in NASCAR and is always a nice diversion.
