2017 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA Sportsman Sidebar

Justin Ashley and Steven Whiteley drive two very different race cars but they got the same result at the 48th Amalie Gatornationals. Ashley and Whiteley both won their categories at sun-drenched Gainesville Raceway.

Ashley and Whiteley brought to five the number of Goodyear winners at Gainesville.

“Absolutely amazing feeling,” Ashley said. He won in the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Top Alcohol Dragster category in his first national event appearance. TAD is for the most powerful and fast sportsman cars in NHRA racing, cars that look very much like Top Fuel dragsters. Ashley won his final round at 275.96 mph.

Ashley lives in Plainview, N.Y. He raced on Goodyear’s D2747 rear tire at Gainesville and said his 60-foot times repeated all weekend. “They’ve been pretty consistent,” he said. “The car has been consistent at each increment all weekend.”

Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., raced on Goodyear’s D3122 rear tire. He didn’t know he’d won the final round until after he’d turned off the drag strip. It was his first Pro Mod win.

“I didn’t see the win light,” Whiteley said. “The Safety Safari is usually there … but they were at the other turnout, so I didn’t know.”
Whiteley’s father and mother are national event winners in Alcohol class racing.

“All the hard work that we’ve put in, we’re finally getting rewarded for it,” Steven Whiteley said.

The J&A Services Pro Mod Drag Racing Series cars are creatively-fashioned versions of production cars with a wide variety of power applications available by rule. Whiteley won his final round with a speed of 253.52 mph.

Goodyear employs about 66,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
