2017 Bahrain GP: Formula One F1 Qualifying Results - Bottas, Mercedes On Pole!

By Mike Sulka

Mercedes Pole surprise! Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 Mercedes took pole for the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit with a remarkable lap of 1:28.769. For Valteri, it was for his first pole the year, and his career. The Pole snapped a string of six straight poles by Lewis Hamilton.

For Mercedes, it is the team's third Pole on 2017 - 18th straight dating back to 2016. It was also the teams' first front-row lock-out of the 2017 Formula One F1 season.

Lewis Hamilton made a mistake in his middle sector, and missed out on his final run to overtake his teammate. Hamilton was just two tenths behind Bottas, and clearly disappointed.

Sebastian Vettel gave it his best shot, but Ferrari have some work to do to close the gap. Half a second, isn't what they were hoping for at Bahrain.

Daniel Ricciardo would squeeze his under-powered Red Bull into fourth quick. An excellent run for the team and driver.

Kimi Raikkonen was fifth quick, but a woeful half second behind Vettel. He has to close that gap if Ferrari are going to challenge for the constructors title.

Recap

Q1 began, and it took Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 two runs to show his true pace, but when he did he set the fastest time of the weekend on the soft (yellow) Pirelli tyre. Interestingly, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Kimi Raikkonen would use the super soft (red) compound to keep up while Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas would stick with the yellows.

Carlos Sainz would lose his Renault engine, and would end his qualifying on the side of the road. Sergio Perez would also lose power from his Mercedes engine.

Did we mention reliability concerns during our Facebook page run-up ? Yes, we did.

KO'd in Q1: Kevin Magnussen (Renault), Marcus Ericsson (Sauber), Sergio Perez (Force India), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren Honda), and Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso).

Q2 the hammer dropped. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of the weekend on the super soft Pirelli tyres with a lap of 1:29.535. Valtteri Bottas showed himself worthy and was just two hundredths behind. Sebastian Vettel was also VERY close at six hundredths behind Hamilton.

How bad is it at McLaren Honda, Alonso made one qualifying attempt in Q2 - which was slowest - and ditched his helmet when he returned to the garage after another Honda engine problem. Indy 500 here we come!

KO'd in Q2: Daniel Kvyat (Toro Rosso), Lance Stroll (Williams), Pascal Wehrlein (Sauber), Esteban Ocon (Force India), Fernando Alonso (McLaren Honda).

In Q3, Daniel Ricciardo would be first out and turn a time in the 1:30s, not so good. Valtteri Bottas would strike next with a 1:28.8, but Lewis would return the favor and drop the provisional pole to 1:28.7. Raikkonen would continue to complain about his Ferrari, but it wouldn't make it go any faster.

Valtteri Bottas would jump to provisional pole on his final run, and just as he crossed the finish line, Hamilton would make a mistake in his middle sector. Game over, first pole for Valtteri!

Next up, the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.
