2017 Bahrain GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Vettel, Ferrari Win!

By Mike Sulka

Ferrari are for real! Sebastian Vettel and his No. 5 Ferrari has won the 2017 Formula One F1 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit. For Vettel, it is his second victory of the year. Vettel now has 44 career victories - 4th all-time behind Alain Prost. It was also Vettel's 88th career podium which is 5th on the all-time list behind Fernando Alonso (97). With the victory, Vettel takes sole possession of the drivers points lead by seven points. It is his third career win at the Bahrain GP.

For Ferrari, it was the team's second victory of the year and 226th all-time. Even more to the point, it would seem that Ferrari for real during the Grand Prix. They are easier on the tyres, and if they can find a bit of pace during qualifying they could be dominant.

Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes would get a solid start, but couldn't keep Vettel behind entering Turn One. While Hamilton was blistering quick at times, the end result was a second place finish, and his 107th career podium. Hamilton is now second all-time on the podium list - breaking a tie with Alain Post - behind the legendary Michael Schumacher (155). Hamilton was significantly slowed by his loss of P2 at the start, which put him behind during the double pit-stop under the Safety Car and led to the 5-second penalty.

Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 would finish third after leading the Grand Prix to claim his 11th career podium. It could have been a better day, but step by step, Bottas is checking off the accomplishments.

Kimi Raikkonen put in a solid effort today, finishing 30 seconds behind the leaders. While Kimi needs to be beating Bottas, small steps, he was closer.

Daniel Ricciardo would finish fifth for Red Bull after a great start. But the Red Bull wasn't able to keep up today.

Recap

We talked about reliability - on our Facebook page - as being an issue before the Grand Prix, and we were wrong. It didn't take the full anger of a Grand Prix to break a McLaren Honda. No. Stoffel Vandoorne's Honda imploded in the garage causing him to miss the entire Grand Prix.

Yes, seriously. Good thing they have the best chassis on the grid (Alonso).

Lights out! While commentators reported a slow start from Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) - it wasn't - Sebastian Vettel (Gerrari) would get a good run behind Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and out-brake Hamilton entering Turn One and get past on the outside. A fantastic move.

After the first lap, the order was Bottas, Vettel, Hamilton, Max Verstappen (Red Bull), and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull).

Kevin Magnussen was the second out of the Grand Prix, pulling his Haas F1 entry off to the side of the road on Lap 8.

Vettel would be the first of the leaders to pit, taking on another set of supersofts.

Lance Stroll would be speared by Carlos Sainz which would bring out the Safety car on Lap 14. Both Mercedes would pit, but it would be a long stop for Bottas, while Hamilton waited. They both would get going, but Vettel would take advantage and take the lead of the Grand Prix.

At the restart on Lap 17, Vettel and Bottas would have a fantastic fight with Vettel keeping his lead. Behind Hamilton would dispense with Daniel Ricciardo entering Turn One.

On Lap 20, the Stewards would issue a 5-second penalty to Lewis Hamilton for impeding Daniel Ricciardo during the entry to the pits under the Safety Car. Essentially a non-penalty since it wasn't a stop-go.

Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) would show a bit of metal on Lap 24, as he would push past Felipe Massa (Williams) for fourth. During the start, Raikkonen had slipped back to seventh.

On Lap 27, Mercedes would issue team orders and force Valtteri Bottas back to third. Hamilton ascend to second. Though it wouldn't matter as Bottas would pit for tyres three laps later.

Vettel would pit from the lead on Lap 34, leaving Hamilton to take the point with the hope that he could take the soft tyre to the end of the Grand Prix.

Then Hamilton would pit on Lap 41. Vettel would re-take the lead and streak home to victory.

Next up, the 2017 Formula One F1 Russian Grand Prix in two weeks.
