2017 Spain GP (Barcelona): Formula One F1 Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

It is time for Formula One's 2017 European Grand Prix season! First on deck, and the fifth round of the 2017 Formula One world championship is the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.

The F1 circuit is a 16-turn 4.655km track. Sunday's race will be won by the driver that completes 66 laps/ 307.104 km the fastest.

Catalunya has been a mainstay on the annual F1 calendar since 1991, with the first Grand Prix being won by Nigel Mansell in a Williams FW14 / Renault RS3 (engine). Interestingly, Mansell won from second place.

You might put that finish to memory, because only four times has the Spanish Grand Prix been won from second place (1991 - Mansell, 1994 - Damon Hill, 2000 - Mika Hakkinen, 2011 - Sebastian Vettel). Only once has the Spanish Grand Prix been won from third - Michael Schumacher in 1996.

The statistic that dominates Spain is that 19 of 26 times, the Spanish Grand Prix winner has been won by the Pole sitter. From 2001 until 2010 there was a string of ten straight races going to the F1 driver starting number one.

But then again, Fernando Alonso won the 2014 event from fifth place - the lowest starting position to win at Cataluyna ever! And three of the last six Grand Prix in Spain have been won by someone other than the polesitter.

Has the DRS era changed what's possible here ?

Even if it has, it won't matter this year. Because we are going with Lewis Hamilton to win from Pole.

We still like our odds.

Should Hamilton fail, we'll pick Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) - starting second - to pick up the pieces and take victory at Barcelona. The Ferrari has been great in race trim, and nearly took Pole.

So enjoy! The intra-field battles and skirmishes tomorrow should be interesting.
