2017 British GP (Silverstone): Formula One F1 Race Results - Hamilton, Mercedes Win!

By Mike Sulka

Easy and comfortable! Ferrari collapse! Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes has easily won the 2017 Formula One F1 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit. For Hamilton, it is his fourth victory of the year - all from Pole. Hamilton now has 57 career victories - 2nd all-time behind Michael Schumacher (91). It was also Hamilton's 110th career podium which is second on the all-time list behind Michael Schumacher (155). It is Hamilton's fifth win at the British Grand Prix matching Jim Clark.

For Mercedes, it is the team's sixth win of the year. It was Mercedes second one-two finish of the season.

Valtteri Bottas would finish second, after starting ninth. He would get past Vettel on his second attempt on Lap 44. Bottas would also benefit after Kimi Raikkonen's left front tyre with two laps to go. It is Bottas' 7th podium of the year, and 16th of his career.

Kimi Raikkonen and his No. 7 Ferrari would finish third to pick-up his third podium of the year, and 87th of his career. Raikkonen's Pirelli tyre would fail and force him to pit. He was able to recover to take third. Raikkonen is sixth on the all-time podium list. Ferrari hasn't won at Silverstone since 2011.

Max Verstappen and Red Bull kept the best of the rest title, and put up a good fight with Vettel to keep him behind early in the Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) drove a remarkable race from 19th to finish fourth!

Sebastian Vettel and his No. 5 Ferrari had a miserable race go worse on the last lap as he finished seventh. His front left would fail, he would slide off track and recover. His championship points lead would drop to one point.

Recap

The rain stayed away, but the clouds loomed at Silverstone. Jolyon Palmer (Renault) would lose the hydraulics and would not make the start. Race Control would abort the start to clear the stricken Renault.

Hamilton would get away smoothly, and take the point. Behind, Raikkonen would slot into second. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would get the jump on Sebastian Vettel and the pair would fight hard but the younger driver would take over third.

Further back, the Toro Rosso teammates would nearly take each other out which would bring out the Safety Car. Daniel Kvyat would cause the incident, but would survive after getting a new nose. Race control would hand him a drive through penalty.

The Lap 5 restart would have Hamilton in front, followed by Raikkonen, Verstappen, Vettel and Hulkenberg. Fernando Alonso (McLaren Honda), started last, would be up to 13th after six laps (His Honda would eventually fail on Lap 34). Valtteri Bottas would move up to fifth by Lap Nine.

Vettel would line-up Verstappen on Lap 14, a wild fight would ensue with both drivers pushing the other off track during the scrap. Bottas would be the main benefactor, and close up to within a second. Vettel would finally give up the battle and pit on Lap 19. Red Bull would try to match the strategy, but they would fail. Vettel would take the track position with all the drivers ahead of him needing to pit.

On Lap 22, Vettel would take fourth from Hulkenberg and start chasing down Bottas and Raikkonen.

Raikkonen would pit on Lap 26, with a chasing Vettel closing at six tenths a second. Interestingly, Ferrari could have left Raikkonen out, but they chose not to.

Hamilton would pit from the lead on Lap 27. He would easily return to the point on the soft tyre.

Bottas would finally pit on Lap 33, and the order at the front would be Hamilton, Raikkonen, Vettel, Bottas, Verstappen.

Hamilton would cruise home to an easy victory, unchallenged throughout the Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas would chase down Vettel by Lap 43, and take two attempts at the Ferrari driver. But the second would be clean and easy. Bottas to a podium!

With three laps to go, the left fronts of both Ferrari would fail. Raikkonen would be the first victim, he'd pit and salvage a third place finish. Vettel would drop from third to seventh after his left front would fail.

Next up, the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix in two weeks.
