2017 Japanese GP (Suzuka): Formula One F1 Race Results - Hamilton, Mercedes Win!

By Mike Sulka

Unchallenged. Championship basically over. Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes drove to an unchallenged win at the 2017 Formula One F1 Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka circuit. For Hamilton, it is his eighth victory of the year - seventh when starting from Pole. Hamilton now has 61 career victories - 2nd all-time behind Michael Schumacher (91). It was also Hamilton's 114th career podium which is second on the all-time list behind Michael Schumacher (155). It is Hamilton's third win at Suzuka. Hamilton now leads the F1 drivers championship over Sebastian Vettel by 59 points. Hamilton has all but clinched the championship.

For Mercedes, it is the team's 10th win of the year.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would pick up his third podium of the year, and 10th of his Formula One career.

Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) rounded out the podium with his 9th podium, and 27th of his career.

Valtteri Bottas was once again a poor excuse for a number two driver at Mercedes, he finished fourth and well off the pace.

Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) drove up through the field to fifth after allowing himself to get pushed off track on Lap 1 by Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), and dropping back to 14th.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) would get a solid start, followed by Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would catch Sebastian Vettel and get past his ailing car just past the bridge. The the field would stream past Vettel, leaving him sixth. He would be saved by the Safety Car for Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) who slid off the track. Vettel would say, "I still have the same issue."

After the restart, Vettel would drive to his Ferrari pitbox... his Grand Prix would be over. His championship hopes crushed.

Hamilton would lead. Followed by Verstappen, Esteban Ocon (Force India), Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes).

On Lap 9, the virtual Safety Car would be issued to recover the car of Marcus Ericsson (Sauber). The accident would be cleared quickly, and racing would continue. Ricciardo would get past Ocon, and move into third. Bottas would follow Riccardo through to fourth.

By Lap 15 Verstappen would tell his team his tires were blistering, Hamilton would cruise on at the front.

Hamilton would pit from the lead and take on soft Pirelli tyres on Lap 23, and stroll to victory completely unchallenged.

A second virtual safety car would be deployed on Lap 48 for the stricken Williams of Lance Stroll who had a right front tyre failure and drove straight on through the gravel. He'd save it, and pull to the side of the road.

Next up, the Formula One F1 fraternity will head to Austin, Texas for the 2017 United States Grand Prix in two weeks.
