2018 Chinese (Shanghai) GP: Formula One F1 Starting Line-up, Grid & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The Formula One fraternity will line-up for round three at the Shanghai International Circuit for the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix. Formula One has been racing at Shanghai since 2004, with the first event being won by Rubens Barrichello in a Ferrari. Although four of the previous eight different winners will line-up for Sunday's event, only Lewis Hamilton - four - and Fernando Alonso - twice - have ever won this event multiple times.

The track was build in 18 months on swampland in the shape of a Chinese Symbol and designed by F1 track designer Hermann Tilke. Most estimate that at the time this was the most expensive Formula 1 circuit ever built - $240 million. The circuit located nearly 30 km outside of Shanghai and has the capacity to hold over 200,000 spectators, but has never been close to being sold out.

The winning driver of the Chinese Grand Prix will complete 56 laps around the 16-turn 5.451km circuit for a total of 305.066km. Turns one through four are treacherous to start a race with a significantly decreasing radius that lures drivers into unimaginable lunges. While the track also has a banked entry onto the final long straight which will make for opportunities for those cars with working KERS systems and DRS (Drag reduction systems).

The pole sitter will be Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel who claimed his 52nd Pole during the qualifying session. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) will also line-up on the front row.

Which brings us to our stat of the day, with 14 Grand Prix in Shanghai only twice (Jenson Button - 2010 - from 5th, Michael Schumacher - 2006 - from sixth) has a driver won a Chinese Grand Prix starting worse than third - otherwise every race has been won from the front three positions.

So how to pick a winner ? We are going to have to take Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) since he is the fastest driver on the ultrasoft Pirelli compound. The Mercedes are as quick as the Ferrari on the soft compound and while Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas may stay close during the opening laps, after the first pitstop we'd expect the red cars to jet away.

Keep an eye on the mid-field tussles, and first turn chaos.

Enjoy the race!
