2018 Indianapolis GP: Rahal Letterman Lanigan IndyCar Qualifying Recap

1) Will Power 1:09.8182 / 125.761 mph (Group 2, Round 3)

11) Takuma Sato 1:10.1979 / 125.081 mph (Group 2, Round 2)

17) Graham Rahal 1:10.3605 / 124.792 mph (Group 1, Round 1)

GRAHAM RAHAL, No. 15 United Rentals Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “Clearly I’m disappointed. It was frustrating to go out there and to lock up the right front like that. I’ve never had it where I went into Turn 1 and I couldn’t read the brake markers because the car was vibrating that badly. It’s disappointing because I think that we probably had a car that was quick enough to maybe advance. Was it a top-six car? No. But should it have advanced? Yes. We’re just going to have to work hard tomorrow and stay out of trouble. Turn 1 is going to be hectic tomorrow. Luckily I’ve got Scott (Dixon) by me. Hopefully he and I can take care of each other and go race.”

· FAST FACTS: The 2018 Grand Prix of Indianapolis will be Graham Rahal’s fifth Indy car race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His highest finish here is second place and his highest start is eighth although he qualified third in 2016 but his car was disqualified for being underweight. In four events, he has three top-10 finishes of second (2015), fourth (2016) and sixth (2017) 21st. Has SIX IndyCar Series wins (2008 – St. Pete street course; 2015 – Fontana Super Speedway, Mid-Ohio road course; 2016 – Texas Super Speedway; 2017 Detroit Race 1, Detroit Race 2) and THREE poles (2009 – St. Pete street course, Kansas oval; 2017 – Detroit Race 1 street) and his highest series season-ending standing is fourth place in 2015... He is tied for third in series point standings with 119 points.

TAKUMA SATO, No. 30 Mi-Jack / Panasonic Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “The first session was quite encouraging. The car felt better than at the test and at that moment, it looked like we would have a good weekend. And then in the second practice we started to struggle with a balance of grip. In qualifying I tried really hard. It was a good feeling to get through the first round but then we missed out getting to the third round by less than two-tenths. That shows how competitive it is these days. We just need a little more speed. (For the race:) It’s always challenging to overtake but you can actually overtake here. There are two good opportunities per lap. We will try to make the most of it.”

· FAST FACTS: Earned his best start at the IMS road course with 11th place today. The 2018 IGP will be Takuma’s fifth race here. His previous best start is 14th – two times (2017, 2014) and his best finish is ninth in 2017 with Andretti Autosport. In his previous race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he won the 101st Running of the Indy 500 with Andretti Autosport... Has TWO IndyCar Series wins (2013 – Long Beach street course, 2017 – Indy 500 oval) and SEVEN poles (2011 Iowa oval, Edmonton street; 2013 Houston Race 1 street; 2014 St. Pete street, Detroit Race 2 street; 2017 Detroit Race 2, Pocono oval). He is currently ranked 14th in series point standings with 70 points.

RLL AT INDY ROAD COURSE…. The INDYCAR Grand Prix will mark the fifth Verizon IndyCar Series race on the 2.439-mile road course. The team’s best finish here is second in 2015 by Rahal and best start is eighth in 2015, also by Rahal.

NEXT UP: The pre-race warm-up will take place tomorrow from 11:15-11:45 a.m. ET and ABC will begin their broadcast of the INDYCAR Grand Prix beginning at 3:30 PM ET.
