2020 Abu Dhabi GP: Formula One F1 Qualifying Results - Verstappen, Red Bull On Pole!

By Mike Sulka

Dramatic Pole! Max Verstappen (Red Bull) has taken a dramatic last gasp Pole at the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a lap of 1:35.246. For Verstappen, it is his first Pole of the season, and third Pole of his Formula One F1 career.

For Red Bull, it is the team's first Pole of the season.

Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) thought the man to beat was his teammate, but not this week. Bottas will start second despite winning the intrateam battle in Formula One's fastest car.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) is back from a weekend off with covid, but couldn't deliver on his final run.

Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) will start fourth with Alexander Albon (Red Bull) rounding out the top five qualifiers.

Q1 Recap

Kevin Magnussen (Haas F1) would set the early marker in qualifying - 1:38.086. All cars would be on the soft (red) Pirelli compound. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) would lower the top time to 1:36.894. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would improve it, but Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would be the next significant step at 1:36.106.

At the 10 minute mark, the pair of Mercedes would show the tracks truer potential with Valtteri Bottas clocking in at 1:35.699 and Lewis Hamilton a tenth behind - that was until his lap was deleted by the Stewards for exceeding the track limits at Turn 20. Hamilton would express concern about the "floor" of his Mercedes. His next lap - while safe - would clock him at 7th fastest overall.

At the checkers, Hamilton would make a second serious run that would top the timesheets at 1:35.528.

KO'd in Q1: Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo), Kevin Magnussen (Haas F1), George Russell (Williams), Pedro Fittipaldi (Haas F1), Nicholas Latifi (Williams).

Q2 Recap

Mercedes and Red Bull would choose the medium (yellow) Pirelli compound to lead off Q2 qualifying. Hamilton would top the charts after the first runs - 1:35.466. Bottas would stay within a tenth.

On the final runs, Verstappen would move back into best of the rest - .17 seconds behind - after strapping on the softs.

KO'd in Q2: Esteban Ocon (Renault), Daniel Ricciardo (Renault), Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), Sergio Perez (Racing Point).

Q3 Recap

Bottas would lead the first runs to take provisional Pole with a lap of 1:35.415. Hamilton would trail by .13 until Verstappen would split the pair - .104 seconds behind.

On the second runs, Hamilton would improve, but Bottas would improve more to take Pole - 1:35.271.

But then...

Max Verstappen would end the season's final qualifying session with a great lap - 1:35.246 - to take Pole!

Congratulations to Max Verstappen and Red Bull for taking a dramatic Pole for the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix!

Next up, the 2020 Formula One F1 season finale on Sunday.
