2020 Abu Dhabi GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Verstappen, Red Bull Win!

By Mike Sulka

Solid victory! Well deserved. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) drove a perfect race to win the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit. For Verstappen, it is his second victory of the year. It is also Verstappen's 10th Formula One F1 career triumph.

For Red Bull, it is the team's second win of the season.

Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) would finish second to pick up his 11th podium of the year, and 56th of his career.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) picked up the final podium position. It was his 14th of the year, 165th of his career.

Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would finish fourth with Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) rounding out the top five finishers.

Recap

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would get a strong start when the lights went out, Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) would stay ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). The two McLaren Renault drivers would slot in behind with Alexander Albon (Red Bull) sandwiched in the middle.

By Lap 5, Verstappen would lead by 2.5 seconds over Bottas, Hamilton would trail by 5.7. Albon would get past Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) on the next lap to move up to fourth.

On Lap 10, the Virtual Safety Car would be deployed as Sergio Perez (Racing Point) would pull to the side of the track with a "loss of power". Verstappen would pit from first, Bottas, Hamilton and Albon would allow follow to put on the hard (white) Pirelli compound tyre.

Safety Car.

On Lap 11, Perez's car would still be at the side of the road and the Safety Car would be deployed wiping out Verstappen's well earned lead. Apparently, a transmission issue since the Marshall's couldn't put the car into neutral.

On Lap 13, Verstappen would lead with the return to racing. Bottas, Hamilton, Albon and Ricciardo - no pit - would follow.

By Lap 20, Verstappen would safely lead by 3.4 seconds over Bottas.

By the halfway point, Verstappen's lead would nearly double. The Mercedes would hope that they could challenge near the end of the Grand Prix as no car had run the hard compound the 40+ laps during the weekend.

Verstappen would continue out front and never put a wheel wrong. Victory!

Congratulations to Max Verstappen and Red Bull, winners of the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Next up, the Formula One F1 season opener in March, 2021, the Australian Grand Prix.
