Dry Wines in Focus at Finger Lakes Wine Festival

Dry Wines in Focus at Finger Lakes Wine Festival

The Finger Lakes Wine Festival presented by Yancey’s Fancy New York’s Artisan Cheese is excited to welcome back the free and ever-popular Wine Seminar series. Introduced to the festival in 2013, these wine seminars are hosted by local winemakers and designed to aid festival attendees in appreciating and finding the dry wines they prefer.

“We often hear folks state they can’t find dry wines, red or white, at the festival. Last year, the seminars helped point them in the right direction. Wineries were happy because they sold dry wines; customers were happy because they found them,” states Marti Macinski, winemaker and owner of Standing Stone Vineyards. “I have already received calls for these types of seminars to come back this year,” continued Macinski, who assists in organizing the seminars.

The seminars, free to festival-goers, take place on both Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13. Saturday’s first session “Dry Red Vinifera Wines,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include a tasting of six dry red vinifera wines from some of the most established wineries in the Finger Lakes. This seminar will repeat on Sunday, with five different wines. Saturday’s second seminar, “Dry Style Riesling,” at 1 p.m. gives attendees a taste of six wines as they experience the variety of flavors that Riesling offers, and learn why not all Rieslings are sweet.

Continuing on Sunday, the “Dry Red Vinifera Wines” seminar at 11:30 a.m. mirrors Saturday morning’s seminar, with five different dry red vinifera wines as attendees taste familiar varieties like Pinot Noir and Merlot, as well as more unfamiliar wines such as Lemberger and Saperavi. New this year, Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. seminar focuses on Chardonnay, as attendees taste both oaked and unoaked Chardonnay from the Finger Lakes, including some wines from vines that are 40 years old.

This year’s seminar presenter list includes winery representatives from some of the region’s best wine producers, including: Steve DeFrancesco, winemaker at Glenora Wine Cellars, Katie Roller, marketing manager at Wagner Vineyards, Marti Macinski, winemaker and owner of Standing Stone Vineyards, and Chris Stamp, Lakewood Vineyards co-owner and winemaker.

The hour-long seminars will take place inside the climate-controlled Media Center at Watkins Glen International. Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

The Finger Lakes Wine Festival presented by Yancey’s Fancy New York’s Artisan Cheese, July 11-13, offers the largest showcase of New York State wines with over 90 wineries paired with regional artisans, live music, and culinary classes, all in one beautiful location. Tickets are available by calling 866.461.RACE or online at www.flwinefest.com. Keep up with The Glen on Facebook and Twitter and download The Glen’s free mobile app from the App Store or Google Play.
