Pretty quick! Will Power and his No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet led the opening practice for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana with a lap of 229.745 Mph. A pretty quick considering Simon Pagenaud led the opening practice in 2018 with a speed of 225.787 mph. After four practices, the fastest time of the weekend was 231.7 Mph. Add six Mph to today's result, and wow!
Speaking of Pagenaud, he was second fastest today at 229.703.
Ed Carpenter has a total of four Pole positions in his IndyCar career. Three of them have been at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2013, 2014, 2018). Today, he was third fastest at 228.653.
Helio Castroneves is another driver that still returns to the yard of bricks each season. Today, the Brazilian was fourth fastest at 228.441
Rookie Colton Herta was fifth fastest.
Overall, 32 cars lapped the Speedway within one second of each other.
Tomorrow, we'll see if the speeds go up. If so, we could be looking at some speeds not seen at Indianapolis in quite some time.
