Pagenaud on Pole! McLaren, Alonso Out. Team Penske IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud and his No. 22 Menards Chevrolet has taken the Pole for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is Pagenaud's first Pole of the 2019 season, and 12th of his IndyCar career. It is also Pagenaud's first Indianapolis 500 Pole.

Ed Carpenter Racing was simply awesome taking on the big boys. ECR came away qualifying second, third, and fourth. Ed Carpenter, Spencer Pigot, and Ed Jones respectively.

Colton Herta would qualify fifth for Andretti Autosport. Herta was the fastest Honda qualifier.

Pole Qualifying Recap

Following a long rain delay, the IndyCar series went late-afternoon qualifying for the 2019 Indianapolis 500. 2018 Pole sitter Ed Carpenter was third up and set the early mark at 229.829 Mph. Teammate Ed Jones, Colton Herta, Josef Newgarden would all take their shots and miss.

And then the sun and wind picked up.

Simon Pagenaud would step up and deliver two 230 Mph laps, but each would be slower than Carpenter. On Lap 3, Pagenaud would turn another 230.1 Mph lap with was half a Mph quicker than Carpenter. Pagenaud would finish with a 4-lap average of 229.992. P1.

Team Penske teammate Will Power would take to the track and he would be slower than Pagenaud. He would set a 4-lap average of 228.645. Provisionally, fifth on the grid.

Spencer Pigot would lead the Saturday qualifying sessions. Today, the Ed Carpenter Racing driver would set a lap of 230.0 on his first lap, and then slow on Lap 2.

Congratulations to Team Penske and Simon Pagenaud Pole sitters for the 2019 Indianapolis 500.

Bump

With Fernando Alonso on the bubble at 227.353, there was just one IndyCar to qualify. Kyle Kaiser. Kaiser would not disappoint, he would turn a 4-lap average of 227.372.

McLaren Racing and Fernando Alonso would be out. While Kaiser would enjoy interviews, Alonso would break-away as quickly as possible.

The lesson here for McLaren Racing... You can't just show up for the Indianapolis 500 and do well if you aren't going to engage one of the top-three teams. Attempting to do so, and you might now even qualify.
