Josef Newgarden and his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet has won the 2019 Detroit Grand Prix Race One under wet conditions. For Newgarden, it is his second win of the 2019 IndyCar season, and 12th of his career. It is Newgarden's first win at Belle Isle. Newgarden ran out of fuel on his run to victory lane.

Alexander Rossi and his No. 27 Andretti Autosport entry would finish second after starting from Pole. For Rossi, it is his third podium of the season, and 15th of his career.

Takuma Sato and his No. 30 would finish third to take his third podium of the season, and 11th of his career.

Felix Rosenqvist and Ryan Hunter-Reay would round out the top-five finishers.

Recap

After an extended weather delay, the IndyCars roared to life with Alexander Rossi and his No. 27 Andretti Autosport entry leading from Pole. Scott Dixon (Ganassi) would make a pass to take second from Josef Newgarden (Penske). Felix Rosenqvist (Ganassi) and Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner Racing) would follow after Lap One of a 75 minute timed affair.

Behind Matheus Leist would lose it and spin and break his front wing in Turn Two. It was the primary reason for the second lap full course yellow.

The race would restart without incident two laps later. Rosenqvist would take third from Newgarden on the restart.

On Lap 12, Marco Andretti would be the first to attempt the slick Firestone racing tire. Andretti's gamble would leave him on the lead lap. His second lap would be four seconds slower, but the track would continue to dry.

Newgarden would pit just ahead of the second full course yellow of the day. Ed Jones would go wide and hit the Turn Seven barrier and need to be pulled out by the safety crew. Advantage Newgarden.

The rest of the field would pit under yellow. Will Power would stop, and be given the sign to go. His lugnut would drop, and the tire would roll off while exiting pit road.

When the field would take the green with 33 minutes to go, Newgarden would lead followed by Rossi, Dixon, Rosenqvist, and Ryan Hunter-Reay. The field would go one lap, and Dixon would get wide after clipping the inside wall and go straight into the outside tire barriers. A very rare situation.

The race would restart with 21 minutes to go, Newgarden would hold off Rossi to keep the lead. The pair would charge until the end.

Congratulations to Josef Newgarden and Team Penske winners of the 2019 Detroit Grand Prix Race One.
