2019 Belgium GP (Spa): Formula One F1 Qualifying Results - Leclerc, Ferrari on Pole!

By Mike Sulka

Dominating. Charles Leclerc and his No. 16 Ferrari has taken the Formula One F1 Pole for the 2019 Belgium Grand Prix at the Spa Francorchamps circuit with a dominating lap of 1:42.519. For Leclerc, it is his third Pole of the 2019 season, and third of his Formula One F1 career.

For Ferrari, it is the team's fourth Pole of the season, and second front row lock-out. Ferrari has yet to win from Pole, or the front row this season.

Sebastian Vettel and his No. 16 Ferrari couldn't keep pace with his teammate was seven tenths behind, but will start second.

Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes will start third after just missing out on beating Vettel - two hundredths behind.

Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) will start fourth with Max Verstappen (Red Bull) starting fifth.

Q1 Recap

With no times set, Robert Kubica (Williams) and his Mercedes engine would pull to the side of the track in a large plum of smoke. The session would be red flagged at the 12:59 to go. Eight minutes later, the entire field would line-up in pit lane and take to the track.

After the first runs, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) would head the order with a lap of 1:43.587. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) would run a half a second behind. Mercedes drivers Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton would be unable to touch those times, 1.5 seconds behind Leclerc. Wow.

Verstappen would make a late run, and would jump up to third fastest just before, the session would be red flagged again due to another engine blow-up - this time... Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo).

KO'd in Q1: Pierre Gasly (Red Bull), Carlos Sainz (McLaren Renault), Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso), George Russell (Williams), Robert Kubica (Williams).

Q2 Recap

All the drivers would stick to the soft (red) Pirelli compound. Leclerc would set the top time after the first runs - 1:43.376. Vettel would slot in a tenth behind. Hamilton would run two tenths back, while Bottas would follow six tenths off the pace.

There would be few improvements during the second runs.

KO'd in Q2: Romain Grosjean (Renault), Lando Norris (McLaren Renault), Lance Stroll (Racing Point), Alexander Albon (Red Bull), Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo).

Q3 Recap

After the first runs, Leclerc would set the fastest time of the weekend - 1:42.644 to take provisional Pole. Lewis Hamilton would be six tenths behind, with Vettel eight tenths back.

Leclerc's second run would also be a monster run, and he would improve to 1:42.519 to take a dominant Pole.

No one could touch him.

Congratulations to Charles Leclerc and Ferrari for taking Pole for the 2019 Belgium Grand Prix.
