2019 Italian GP (Monza): Three Takes From Formula One F1 Qualifying

By Mike Sulka

1. Q3

Look at the video. It was a Renault - Hulkenberg - a McLaren - Sainz - and initially the Racing Point of Lance Stroll that kept the field held up exiting the first chicane at Monza. It was this period of time that led to the final Pole run debacle.

Any other version of the story is wide of the mark.

2. Ferrari

Leclerc has dominated Vettel over the last seven Grand Prix. While Ferrari have kept up the PR ruse that they have two "number one drivers". Its pretty clear where this is headed.

And maybe.. Vettel should be Ok with that.

He's had a great Formula One career, he gets to drive off into the sunset in a Ferrari, and he gets paid well to do it.

Fernando Alonso should have had it so good.

3. Mercedes

At Spa, Mercedes had a half second race pace advantage. That became very clear over the closing laps. At Monza, they thought is that Mercedes race pace is only a tenth.

If true, then track position will decide who wins an losses tomorrow.

The start will be important - as it always is - but we should have a pretty good idea of the winner after Turn One.
