2019 United States GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Bottas, Mercedes Win!

By Mike Sulka

Championship secured. Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 has won the 2019 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. For Bottas, it is his fourth win of the season, and seventh of his Formula One F1 career.

For Mercedes, it is the team's 14th win of the year.

Probably on the wrong strategy, Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes would grab a podium position - his 16th of the year, 150th of his career. Even so, Hamilton would easily claim his sixth Formula One F1 drivers championship with two Grand Prix remaining.

Max Verstappen and his No. Red Bull would grab his seventh podium of the year.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) would finish fourth, while Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would round out the top five finishers.

The lights would go out with Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 Mercedes diving into the Turn One complex. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would also get a good start and begin to pull ahead of Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). He'd complete the move to take second. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) would get bottled up behind Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) would take advantage of that situation. Behind, Alexander Albon (Red Bull) and Carlos Sainz (McLaren Renault) would make contact, but continue. Albion would have to pit later in the lap.

Just two turns later, Hamilton would go past Vettel like he was sitting still. Leclerc would make the same move, but Vettel would suddenly awake and challenge for the position. Leclerc would race Vettel hard and complete the move.

Three turns later, Vettel would blow the braking zone and Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) would be the next to overwhelm Vettel. Vettel would radio in and claim damage due to "extreme understeer". The team would determine there was no damage.

On Lap 8, Vettel's miserable race would end with a right rear suspension failure at Turn 9. Vettel would report "I don't know what happened there."

On Lap 14, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would be the first of the leaders to stop. He'd put on the hard (white) Pirelli compound. Bottas would cover on the next lap and use the same tyre strategy. He'd also return to the track ahead of Verstappen.

Leclerc would stop for the hard compound on Lap 21, and return to the track in sixth following a 7.7 second stop. Two laps later, Leclerc would be fourth but 47 seconds out of the lead.

Hamilton would refuse to pit from the lead on Lap 24 with Bottas on his rear wing. Mercedes would give Bottas permission to "attack" Hamilton, and Bottas would take the lead. Hamilton would stop on the next lap - hard.

Verstappen would stop from second on Lap 35 and put on a set of medium tyres. He'd return to the track in third. Bottas would cover the strategy on the next lap. He would return to the track 9.6 seconds behind the leader - Hamilton - with the TV predicting an easy overtake by Lap 42.

Leclerc would stop for a third time on Lap 43 and put on the soft compound. Meanwhile, Bottas would continue to follow Hamilton with the gap down to four seconds. On Lap 50, Bottas would close to within DRS range. On Lap 52, Bottas second attempt at Hamilton would work as the pair raced down the main straight.

Bottas would roll to victory.

Congratulations to Valtteri Bottas and Mercedes winners of the 2019 United States Grand Prix.

Next up, the Formula One F1 series will head to Interlagos for the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix where the teams and drivers will simply race for pride.
