2020 Turkish GP: Formula One F1 Qualifying Results - Lance Stroll, Racing Point On Pole!

By Mike Sulka

Pink ends Silver Pole streak! Lance Stroll and Racing Point have taken a thrilling Formula One F1 Pole in wet conditions for the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. For Stroll, it is his first Formula One F1 Pole of his career.

Racing Point have taken their first Pole of the season.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) looked to have things under control, but spent much of his final flying laps stuck behind Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo). Verstappen will start on the front row. The Red Bull being better on the full wets rather than the intermediate Pirelli tyre compound.

Sergio Perez (Racing Point) seemed to have it all locked up until the final lap. He'll start third tomorrow.

Alexander Albon (Red Bull) will start fourth. Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) once again kept his car in the top five.

Mercedes Pole streak is over. Hamilton will start sixth, 4.7 seconds slower than Pole.

Q1 Recap

Wet. Brand new asphalt, and a wet track. Intermediates went on. Verstappen went around, but kept it on track. Many would go wide, and slide around, but all would continue. Some on intermediate tyres, others on full wets.

Sliding around the final corner, Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) would put up the first time of 2:07.947. Verstappen would be three seconds behind. The times at the front would tumble as Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) would go fastest at 2:07.001. On his second lap, he would crush the rest of the field - 2:04.0 - then have his time deleted for exceeding track limits. Esteban Ocon (Renault) would head the list with 10 minutes to play - 2:06.1.

And then the rain would fall again. After about three minutes, the Red flag would fly. 6:56 to go.

Qualifying would resume about 40 minutes later with no substantial changes to the order until Romain Grosjean (Haas F1) would find himself in the gravel at Turn One.

Red Flag with 3:30 to go. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Pierre Gasly (Scuderia AlphaTauri) the two biggest names in the KO zone.

Qualifying would quickly resume, and the conditions would be much better as Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would jump to the top of the timesheets by 8.6 seconds - 1:57.485. Yellows would slow the second sector for many drivers. Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would run second overall - two seconds behind Verstappen. Hamilton would finish the session in 14th.

KO'd in Q1: Kevin Magnussen (Haas F1), Daniil Kvyat (Scuderia AlphaTauri), George Russell (Williams), Romain Grosjean (Haas F1), Nicholas Latifi (Williams). Kvyat the only real surprise despite the dramatic session.

Q2 Recap

Verstappen would head the time sheets after the first runs - 1:57.125. Sergio Perez (Racing Point), and Lance Stroll (Racing Point) would follow. Bottas and Hamilton would run behind.

Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would jump forward - 1:56.721 with 8 minutes to go. Stroll would quickly supplant Alban - 1:55.7 - as track conditions would continue to improve. Verstappen would have none of it - 1:53.486. The times would continue to tumble. With 4 minutes to go, Verstappen's top time would improve to 1:52.036. Bottas and Hamilton would slot in behind, but 1.7 seconds adrift.

Verstappen would put in another top time - 1:50.293 with 2 minutes left in the session.

Verstappen wouldn't improve, Albon would, Hamilton would run third, Stroll fourth and Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) up to five.

KO'd in Q2: Lando Norris (McLaren Renault), Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), Carlos Sainz (McLaren Renault), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Pierre Gasly (Scuderia AlphaTauri).

Q3 Recap

Verstappen's first flying lap in the run for Pole would be 1:52.326. All other drivers would be four seconds behind until the Racing Points showed up... Sergio Perez (Racing Point) to provisional Pole at 1:52.037 using the intermediate tyres.

Verstappen would move to pitlane, and make the obvious tyre exchange. As would many others.

5 minutes to go.

Verstappen would complain about the intermediate.

With one minute to play, Perez would improve to 1:49.321. Lance Stroll would slot in right behind. Racing Point front row ?

Verstappen would improve right before the checkers, but could only get within 1.3 seconds of Perez. Hamilton would run 8th and Bottas 9th starting their final laps.

Stroll would storm through for provisional Pole - 1:47.765. Verstappen would complete his final flyer but three tenths shy.

Congratulations to Lance Stroll and Racing Point for taking Pole for the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix.

Next up, the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday.
