2020 Bahrain GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Hamilton, Mercedes Win

By Mike Sulka

Horrific crash, wild start. Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes has won the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix after a wild start to the race. For Hamilton, it is his 11th win of the season and 95th of his Formula One F1 career.

For Mercedes, it is the teams 13th win of the year.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would pick up his 10th podium of the year, and 41st of his career.

Alexander Albon (Red Bull) would finish third to add his second podium of the year, and second of his career.

Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) and Carlos Sainz (McLaren Renault) would finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) would get great starts, while Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) would get swarmed by the field as the cars entered and exited Turn One.

Romain Grosjean's Haas F1 challenger would swerve across Daniil Kvyat (Scuderia AlphaTauri) and get slightly more sideways after contact. He would slam nose first into the barriers which would split his car in half. The crash would burst the sled into a huge flame as fuel would ignite - something you never see in racing these days.

Grosjean would struggle exiting the cockpit while entwined in the metal barrier. The flames surrounding him. The course workers would struggle to contain the fire but with seemingly little impact.

Grosjean would engage in the fight of his life...

Finally he would wrestle himself free.

He would climb over the barrier to reach the medical delegate... and safety - in what felt like an eternity.

The medical delegate trails the field at the start of a Grand Prix, but apparently not by much. He was right there when Grosjean needed him.

Red Flag.

Grosjean would be returned to pitlane. An ambulance would wisk him away to be helicoptered to the hospital with minor burns to his hands and ankles.

After a lengthy delay, the race would be restarted with Hamilton, Verstappen, Sergio Perez (Racing Point) and Bottas leading the front two rows. Hamilton and Verstappen would get good starts. Bottas would make a better start, but Verstappen would keep him behind as would Perez.

Before the lap would be completed, Lance Stroll (Racing Point) would end up upside down in Turn 8 after right rear / left front contact with Daniil Kvyat (Scuderia AlphaTauri).

Safety Car.

Bottas would charge into the pits and take on the hard Pirelli compound (white) after a slow puncture.

On the Lap 9 restart, Hamilton would lead, Verstappen, Perez, Alexander Albon (Red Bull) and Lando Norris (McLaren Renault) would follow. The field would finally complete a full lap at speed.

Hamilton would slowly build his lead to 3.4 seconds by Lap 18. Verstappen would easily keep second over Perez by six more seconds.

Two laps later, Hamilton would stop for fresh rubber and put on the medium (yellow) Pirelli compound. Albon would follow from fourth. Verstappen and Perez would pit on the next lap for the hard compound. Hamilton would resume his position at the point.

At Lap 30, Hamilton would lead by 5 seconds, Verstappen would have a 16 second advantage over Perez. Albon and Norris would follow.

On Lap 35, Verstappen would begin the pitstops and put on the hard compound. Hamilton would make his final stop a lap later with the same strategy. Perez would follow the lap after that - also the hard compound.

The order would remain the same until Perez's engine would let go and bring out a Safety Car on Lap 55. Advantage Albon.

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes winners of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Next up, the Formula One F1 series will stay at the Bahrain International Circuit for the Sakhir Grand Prix next weekend.
